One of the first steps to changing our thoughts IS changing our words. And once we get clear on how to better support ourselves in changing our words, our world changes with us.
How to begin…
Without making any major change in your own life, behaviors or actions, start by noticing how folks around you use their words. Are they making people feel better or worse? Are they calming and soothing the situation or starting shit and fanning flames? You can always tell, your body being a clear indicator. Do you feel like lingering or running away? This exercise in awareness will help you become conscious of the energy present in any situation. Do you want to hang out? Or is it time to skedattle? And whether the energy you’re feeling is your own or someone else’s, becoming consciously aware you’re feeling it is a HUGE part of this game.
Lightly intend to notice how it physically feels to be around your favorite and not so favorite people.
Who are your favorite people to be around?
Who always gives you a lift?
Who exhausts and gives you a headache when you walk away from them?
What are the things about each that you enjoy or don’t?
What are they always talking about?
How to Change Your Words
Making a list can help to organize and clarify information so we can begin noticing the patterns that swirl through our existence. So, once you get better at noticing how people, conversations and situations make you FEEL physically, in your body, you can start moving through the energy that will clear out the irritations and bring in more high vibe, life changing experiences.
Change your words by finding better thoughts and phrases that match what you’re looking to create and write them down. Affirmations are helpful when you’re in struggle and can’t easily access those light, forward thinking, helpful thoughts. Make your list and keep it handy. Repeat them often. Look at them often. Put them up on your bathroom mirror. Set an alarm on your phone that goes off multiple times a day with the affirmations you’re relaxing into.
These can be your own thoughts or ones you borrow from someone else. The most important thing is that you feel good saying it, you buy it, you want it.
Some of my favorite affirmations are from The Writings of Florence Scovel Shinn and Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life. I have had these books around for over 20 years and will browse through and find loving and soothing insights into anything I might need to soften around.
As you move into your journey of noticing how things make you feel and hearing the words from yourself and others that instigate these feelings, you’ll discover a treasure trove of information that will make your life infinitely easier to navigate.
Becoming aware of our own physical and emotional responses helps us relax around most situations. You’ll be able to feel that familiar feeling in your chest or stomach when faced with a certain situation and then laugh realizing it’s a childhood trigger. Softening around the tension and breathing slowly and deeply allows the moment to pass and releases you from the trigger. When we can mentally support ourselves through emotional or physical discomfort is when we become reality creating ninjas. Change your words, change your life.
